GENERAL union GMB has entered talks with security firm G4S over a threat to 138 jobs, it revealed yesterday.
The company announced a “restructuring” of its British cash-processing business on January 9.
G4S processes a third of Britain and Ireland’s total cash spend for the major high-street banks.
However, use of cash for everyday transactions is decreasing as people increasingly use cards.
GMB negotiators want any redundancies to be voluntary and has demanded that alternative posts are found for as many workers as possible.
GMB national officer Roger Jenkins said: “GMB is supporting members through this difficult time and alternatives to redundancy are being explored.
“We are fully aware of the pressures on the cash-services industry in the face of electronic payments and constant demand for cost-cutting from the finance and retail sectors.
“GMB will continue to work closely with G4S to avoid compulsory redundancies and to ensure that the long-term future of our members is secure.”
