US occupation forces in Afghanistan have admitted that local police are investigating the massacre of 10 election campaign workers who were killed in an air strike by foreign fighters in the north of the country.

Takhar province Governor Abduljabar Taqwa revealed that the workers' vehicle had been attacked by a jet and two helicopters in the dawn attack.

US-led military commanders conceded that occupation troops had called in air strikes on supposed militants in the same area.

Mr Taqwa said that two other people had been wounded, including a candidate in this month's parliamentary elections, and added that the region in which the assault took place was "peaceful."

US military commander Major General David Garza claimed that 12 insurgents had been killed or injured and that several passengers had been identified as carrying weapons.
