Suicide bombers kill 39 in Lahore

Friday 12 March 2010
Lahore bomb

A pair of suicide bombers targeting army vehicles in Lahore have detonated explosives within seconds of each other, killing at least 39 people and wounding nearly 100.

The bombers, who were on foot, struck RA Bazaar, a residential and commercial neighbourhood where several security agencies have facilities. Lahore police chief Parvaiz Rathore said that about 10 of those killed were soldiers. It was the fourth major attack in Pakistan this week. On Monday, a suicide car bomber struck a building in Lahore where police interrogated high-value suspects — including militants — killing at least 13 people and wounding dozens. The Pakistani Taliban claimed responsibility. Also this week, suspected militants attacked the offices of World Vision, a US-based Christian charity, in the north-west district of Mansehra, killing six Pakistani employees, while a bombing at a cinema in Peshawar killed four people. The attacks suggest that US-backed army offensives and drone attacks against militants are destabilising the nuclear-armed country, which borders occupied Afghanistan.

Delay rather than resistance

Party political manoeuvring between the Greek social-democratic, conservative and fascist parties has delayed acceptance of the blackmail demands presented by the troika of European Union, International Monetary Fund and the European Central Bank.
