P.D. Crofts - Moments Before The Crash

Queens Park Rangers 2-0 Plymouth

Friday 12 March 2010

When Neil Warnock took the reins at Queens Park Rangers on-loan Tottenham star Adel Taarabt must have thought his Rangers career had come to an end.

Warnock, with the greatest of respect, is an old school manager.

He demands commitment, work ethic and professionalism - all of the above are traits that you would not associate with the flamboyant Moroccan.

But two games into his QPR adventure, the 61-year-old has surprisingly taken a shine to the player he calls "Tarbs."

His performance against Plymouth was simply outstanding.

It was full of the usual entertaining nutmegs and the exquisite close control, but despite the occasional continental whine, he seemed to understand the concept that football is a team game with the occasional pass to a team-mate, which has been a rarity so far this season.

At one point he even chased back and won the ball after losing possession. The Rangers fans stood and applauded.

Warnock spoke highly of the 21-year-old and believes he could be the man get the best out of the talented youngster.

"He is a gifted lad," said Warnock.

"I spoke to Harry (Redknapp) and he said 'you'll be pulling your hair out sometimes.'

"But I think I'm the right manager for him.

"If he tries any of his flicks in our own half, I'll let him know about it."

Rangers were good value for the win, which lifted them comfortably clear of the drop zone.

Plymouth on the other hand looked like a side that is waiting for their inevitable relegation to happen.

Despite working their socks off for the 863 travelling Pilgrim fans they possessed no attacking threat to seriously trouble a side who had failed to keep a clean sheet in a staggering 26 games.

Taarabt opened the scoring from the penalty spot following Kari Arnason foul on Tamas Priskin.

Damien Stewart went close just before half time as he headed over from six yards, but he made amends early in the second as he rose to head home a perfect Taarabt set-piece.

Neil Warnock is a man who rarely fails to deliver and if he can steer Taarabt in the right direction then the Spurs youngster has the world at his feet.
