David Beckham's return to Old Trafford was overshadowed by a double strike from Manchester United's current England hero as Wayne Rooney struck either side of the break to almost single-handedly book United's place in the quarter-finals of the Champions League.
Ji-Sung Park added a third United goal to make victory absolutely certain before Darren Fletcher headed a fourth in the closing stages.
"When we play at that tempo, we're difficult to play against," declared Sir Alex Ferguson after his side's 7-2 aggregate victory, before stating that "it doesn't matter who we play next."
The Reds wasted no time in posing a threat to their visitors. United talisman Rooney turned superbly to fire a low shot inches wide after Antoine Valencia had dispossessed Marek Jankulovski.
Skipper Gary Neville then cut in from the right to go close from twenty yards after Ji-Sung Park had also managed to catch Jankulovski in possession.
But Milan went even closer through Ronaldinho, who connected with Andrea Pirlo's deflected free-kick to send a header flashing just the wrong side of Edwin Van Der Sar's left-hand upright.
Milan stopper Christian Abbiati pushed a stinging Nani drive behind as United's attack quickly gathered momentum.
And it was no more than United deserved when Rooney stole in ahead of Daniele Bonera to glance Neville's left-wing cross past a bemused Abbiati as United took a deserved 13th minute lead.
Clarence Seedorf started the second half for the visitors, whilst David Beckham's first warm-up sprints down the touchline were warmly applauded by the United faithful.
But Old Trafford erupted moments later as Rooney beat Abbiati to Nani's visionary pass to double United's lead on the night.
Nani then got away from Ignazio Abate only for Abbiati to somehow claw his tantalising cross off the head of Valencia, before veteran Paul Scholes freed Park with a textbook slide-rule pass that saw the South Korea international add the decisive third.
David Beckham finally made his much-anticipated appearance from the bench in the 63rd minute to receive a standing ovation from the Old Trafford faithful, as did man of the match Rooney when he gave way to Dimitar Berbatov moments later.
Van Der Sar then stuck out a foot to deflect Mathieu Flamini's low piledriver to safety, before reacting superbly to keep out a vicious first-time Beckham volley.
But Fletcher rubbed salt in Milan's wounds by diving to head a fourth as United cruised into the quarter finals.
